Thanksgiving Study: A Stuffing Complete with Consumer Insights

As hard as it is to believe, another Holiday Season is upon us; the hustle and bustle has already begun. Starting with the wonderfully wholesome tradition of gathering with loved-ones on a Thursday in late November, giving thanks for our blessings and of course, eating ourselves into oblivion, we call this great ritual Thanksgiving. So, what does this look like for most of us? TrendSource looked to our wINput mobile app users for the answers. Here are the results of our Thanksgiving Consumer Insights Study. #SurveySays…

Family

You can’t choose them so you might as well join them. And, of the 94% of survey respondents celebrating Thanksgiving, over 90% are doing just that by spending the glorious holiday with family. Although we love them, we aren’t up for going too far as 75% are traveling 50 miles or under and 89% are making the voyage via automobile.

We gladly hop in the car for mama’s cooking. 59% of respondents have dear old mom to thank for catering their bountiful feasts.

Menu

Turkey! Did you suspect otherwise?! 82% of respondents will enjoy turkey on this holiday affectionately dubbed “Turkey Day!”

Gotta have potatoes too: 56% of respondents prefer mashed potatoes, followed by sweet potatoes coming in second at 19%.

Pumpkin pie tops off the meal nicely as 31% of respondents called it out as their favorite with apple second at 24% and pecan trailing closely behind at 22%. We get it; it’s hard to choose a favorite!

Thanksgiving Pie Chart
This is the one holiday that we can get away with being impatient infantile gluttons, and shamefully (or maybe proudly), most of us take advantage of that with 93% of respondents admitting to sampling the goods prior to serving and 35% planning to attend more than one Thanksgiving celebration. Better bring out the elastic waistband!

The Prep

It’s a labor of love: it needs to be extra special. So where will we hunt for provisions? 69% of respondents are headed to a grocery store chain, and 27% will visit a big box retailer for their delectable edibles.

Thanksgiving Shopping

80% of respondents are planning to get the process started a minimum of a few days before the big day; 29% will start a week prior and 19% will begin 1-2 weeks ahead of time. Thanksgiving chefs take this business seriously as 46% of respondents will spend at least a full day in the kitchen to prepare. Wow, that is a lot of work!

The Fun

Other than eating, there are other favorite traditions associated with Thanksgiving.

27% of respondents love to watch football while 19% watch parades and another 19% play games. All and all, it is a great day.

And we can’t forget the most important part! 63% of respondents will give thanks for their family and 20% will give thanks for their health – two necessities for a wonderful life.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Methodology: TrendSource surveyed U.S. wINput users between November 6th and November 13th, 2013. Results represent a total of approximately 190 respondents (rate of response differed by question). All respondents opted in to respond voluntarily.
