E-Verify is a US government-sponsored online program that compares the identification documents New Hires provide against those already on file with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Social Security Administration (SSA).
While E-Verify has been around since the late ‘90s, there still remains some confusion about particular points relating to the program. Every couple of weeks, TrendSource does its best to answer some of the questions employers have about E-Verify.
Today, we are looking at what is an E-Verify employer, why employers use E-Verify, and how much E-Verify costs employers.
An E-Verify employer simply refers to an employer who uses E-Verify, whether by requirement or by choice. When an employer uses E-Verify, they post required signage in their office outlining the program (see below).
As we have previously described, different states have different regulations about whether employers must use E-Verify to file Form I-9 in order confirm employment eligibility. Nonetheless, employers often choose to use E-Verify for the added layers of certainty and compliance best efforts that the program offers.
E-Verify is a free online service for employers to use. Since the program relies principally on automation, it is quite cheap for the government to operate. It also helps the government work towards its goal of accurately confirming the employment eligibility of people working in the United States.
That said, when companies like TrendSource sell I-9 Verifications with E-Verify, they charge a small fee to account for the additional front and back end work filing with E-Verify represents.
TrendSource helped pioneer Remote I-9 Verifications to help companies rapidly and efficiently onboard their New Hires, wherever they reside. Earlier this year, TrendSource, recognizing the value E-Verify offers to businesses, began to offer I-9 Verifications with E-Verify.
Now, employers can choose whether they want a traditional I-9 Verification or an I-9 Verification with E-Verify. They can make this choice while using our online ordering platform, ordering employment eligibility verifications in bulk or a-la-carte, with or without E-Verify.
As always, it is important for employers to check their local state regulations when considering whether or not to be an E-Verify employer. TrendSource does not help our clients decide whether use E-Verify for employment eligibility verification. Whether they use E-Verify when they complete Section 2 of Form I-9 or not, we are here to help.
