One of the largest candy-filled holidays is right around the corner, so with the help of our wINput friends, TrendSource put together a special Easter basket full of insights! Where do consumers plan to make their purchases? What do they plan to buy? Or will they celebrate in other ways? Let’s take a “peep” and find out!
To Celebrate or Not to Celebrate?
A slight bump from the 77% last year, 82% of respondents are planning to celebrate Easter this year. Of those, 91% plan to purchase gifts for Easter, a significant increase from 71% last year. What do they plan to purchase? Candy/chocolate, Easter baskets and toys still dominate the gift category with cards, fashion and flowers trailing behind.
Of those planning to make Easter baskets for their loved ones, 39% plan to include candy/chocolate, 25% plan to include toys, 9% plan to include a gift card, 5% plan to buy flowers for their Easter basket, and 8% plan to include clothing (14% are also including something else). While only 8% plan to include clothing in their Easter basket, 23% of respondents still say their Easter budget will include a new outfit this year.
Top Shopping Destinations
Walmart still leads as a top shopping destination for Easter gifts at 30%, followed by grocery stores, Target and drug stores, such as CVS, Walgreens or Rite Aid.
Physically visiting a store for Easter gifts continues to be the preferred method for purchases at 79%, but we did see a small uptick in online purchases, increasing just slightly from 3% to 5% this year and a steady 16% plan to shop both in-store and online.
Over 90 million chocolate Easter bunnies are made each year?
It’s true. Over 90 million chocolate Easter bunnies are produced in the U.S. annually. So, this year, we decided to dig a little deeper into those candy/chocolate purchases. With so many chocolate bunnies hopping off the shelves, it’s no wonder 22% of our respondents plan to buy them this year.
But, even after all that production of chocolate bunnies, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Eggs take the cake! Err… we mean candy.
Not With Gifts but With Food!
Some of our respondents plan to celebrate Easter, not by buying gifts but by planning a special holiday meal. Dinner trumped the holiday meal category with 51% of respondents versus 28% planning a lunch, 16% planning a brunch and only 5% planning a breakfast. Of those celebrating Easter with a special meal, 44% plan to make these meals at home, 37% plan to enjoy their holiday meal at a relative’s house, 12% plan to dine at a restaurant, 5% plan to dine with friends and 2% plan to dine somewhere else.
