What is the History of E-Verify? Where Does E-Verify Come From?

E-Verify was created after the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996, and in 2007 added photo matching capabilities. Though it changed names (from Basic Pilot Program), it has been in operation since the mid-1990s and has been continuously renewed by Congress.

Who Uses E-Verify?

E-Verify is used by nearly 1,000,000 employers of all sizes across all 50 states, Washington DC, Puerto Rico, Guam and the US Virgin Islands. Every day, thousands of employers use E-Verify for the first time.

Do Employers who use E-Verify have Additional Compliance Responsibilities?

Yes, employers using E-Verify must post the Notice of E-Verify Participation poster provided by DHS and the Right to Work poster issued by the Department of Justice, Immigrant and Employee Rights Section at the company’s hiring site. They should be provided with job application materials.

 Is E-Verify Ever Wrong?

Like any other technology, E-Verify does, on rare occasions, return incorrect results. This most often happens when people neglect to update their identifying documents (such as a passport or social security card) after a name change. When E-Verify flags a Verification, there is a simple process to correct the error. If you have questions or concerns, reach out to E-Verify.

How Can Employers Order Remote I-9 Verifications with E-Verify?

Employers can order I-9 Verification with E-Verify through TrendSource’s online platform. During checkout, employers can determine whether they want to add E-Verify to their Remote I-9 Verification order.
