TrendSource Adds E-Verify Option to Remote I-9 Verifications

Today, TrendSource officially begins offering E-Verify as an optional addition to any I-9 Verification order, meaning employers looking to outsource employment eligibility compliance can now include the extra layers of security and certainty E-Verify provides.

But, what is E-Verify, who uses it, and should you? Even if you are an employment eligibility expert, you’ve probably got some questions and we are here to help. So, below we are going to answer the five most pressing questions about E-Verify…and we will be back later this week to answer five more.

What is E-Verify?

Yes, let’s start with the basics! E-Verify is a federal program that compares the information submitted on Section 2 of Form I-9 against existing records from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Essentially, E-Verify uses government records to verify the validity of the documents employees submit to complete Form I-9.

 How Does E-Verify Work?

E-Verify is an entirely online program. TrendSource submits New Hires’ completed I-9s to E-Verify’s online portal, where it is then checked against federal records. Using photo-matching software, the digital program typically returns results within 3-5 seconds.

Is E-Verify Required?

Different states have different requirements for E-Verify and Form I-9. Certain states require all employers to use E-Verify for Form I-9. Others require it for all public employers and contractors. Others don’t require it at all (but it is still a good idea–extra certainty is always useful!). If you are unsure about your local regulations, please reach out directly to E-Verify.

Why Do Employers Use E-Verify?

E-Verify gives employers an additional layer of certainty that they are in compliance with federal employment regulations, helping them to avoid costly penalties in the future. Even in states in which it is not required, employers use E-Verify to bake in an extra level of compliance security. Notably, E-Verify is consistently regarded as one of the government’s most functional services, regularly rated among the highest in user-satisfaction.
